Launched in May 2020, the government-backed Bounce Back Loan Scheme (BBLS) helped keep many UK businesses alive through 2020 – the worst year for growth on record in the UK. The scheme formed part of the Chancellor’s promise to do “whatever it takes” to help firms weather the pandemic. It offered comparatively easy access to credit which SMEs may have been unable to obtain elsewhere.

A year later, the first repayments are falling due, raising a question largely unasked during 2020’s rush to save firms: will borrowers actually be able to pay back what they owe? This report for lenders gives the first indications of an answer to that question.
